Hamlet Is Not Pleased- Awkward ...

After the wedding ceremony, Claudius had to deal with his depressed nephew. No wait, son. Wait, wait isn't he both??

Hamlet likes to speak in riddles and so he told Claudius in a confusing way to basically back off.
"A little more than kin, and less than kind" (1.2.65)
#sassy #paradox
and,
"Not so, my lord, I am too much in the sun" (1.2.67)
Hamlet was not actually talking about tanning, although he could really use one! (tell us if you agree in the comments by entering #getsunhamlet)
He was just being moody and clever by telling Claudius to stop calling him 'son'.
Get over yourself Hamlet...

Gertrude told him to move on, every living thing dies and he has to accept this. She told him to stop dressing in black and start wearing some more cheerful clothes. Well said Gertrude! Hear hear!

Hamlet stood up for himself and told her that he really is depressed and grieving. It does not "seem" like grief, it is (1.2.76).

Claudius and Gertrude want Hamlet to remain with them than go back to school in Wittenberg..how much more awkward and unfair can Hamlet's life get?

Inside Scope

Hamlet let it all out, he wants to die! OMG! This is serious business. We do not think he will do it though, it is a sin. But no one can predict the future. Or can they..?
He thought that his mother loved his father, too bad he had to find out this wasn't true the hard way. Ouch. Must hurt.
"Oh, that this too, too sullied flesh would melt" (1.2.129)  UMMM yeah so Hamlet wants his flesh to melt?? Ok then..
Hamlet is sexist- Calls Women Weak
"Frailty, thy name is woman!" (1.2.146)
Just because his mom is fake doesn't mean it is okay for him to hate on women!
"But break, my heart, for I must hold my tongue" (1.2.159)
Well too bad Hamlet, it's already been said. It's out there.

Claudius & Gertrude: All About the Big Day

Their marriage happened shortly after the funeral itself. Hamlet was on his way home from Wittenburg to attend the funeral. Poor guy had to watch his own mom marry his uncle. Anyways, the wedding took place in the Copenhagen court. Everyone dressed up for the funeral, except for Hamlet. He wore all black. Can't really blame the kid, his father just passed away.

It was a grand wedding, practically all of Denmark attended. After delivering his speech, Claudius could wipe away the sweat since the court was pleased.

The food very much resembled the food from the funeral! Hamlet even made the connection when he was talking to Horatio. He said, "Thrift, thrift, Horatio! The funeral baked meats did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables" (1.2.179-180).  Hamlet was blabbing on about the fact that his mom got married so fast that the leftovers from his father's funeral were served to the wedding guests. Gross!

Thrift means money so is he implying that the wedding was rushed to save money?

But the royal family is the richest family of all of Denmark ...
Sounds more like an excuse he planted in his own head. They married for love and Claudius needed to overtake the throne to stop Fortinbras. It's all so obvious you can tell from the pics.

Just look at how happy they are!

Gertrude's Bridal Look

The Queen showed up to her wedding in a grand entrance wearing an incredibly glamorous Pronovia gown. It had 3/4 length sleeves, a 4-foot long train, delicate satin white gloves, a fitted satin corset topped with a lace neckline, and her royal crown.
Denmark Royal Gossip rates Gertrude's bridal look as the top #1 for this year.

Inside Scope: Royal Remarriage - How it all happened

With the old King Hamlet passing away just under two months ago, our Queen Gertrude has moved on and found a somewhat similar replacement- Claudius.....talk about weird! Claudius is the old King's brother,  which makes Gertrude his ...sister in-law ....now wife. Yeah...

You would think they would be totally depressed but it seems like all of Denmark was more sad about the sudden death of the old King than his own wife and brother were!

At least they make a cute couple. This may even be a better match than before.

Claudius tried to sugarcoat the whole situation in his now famous speech ..props to him! Not many people can convince a mass population that incest is OK. Especially since Claudius and Gertrude broke the Chucrh's law of affinity.Well done, King!

You probably just had a 'hold on, King?' moment. Yes, you read that correctly. Claudius has overtaken the throne. Now you probably wonder, 'but how? Shouldn't Hamlet (the old King's son) become King?'. Well yes, but clearly this is not the case, sorry!
